Gold Medals of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Academician Knorre received the gold medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences for his contribution to gene therapy

The highest award of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Lomonosov Grand Gold Medal for 2016, was awarded to the outstanding Russian scientist in the field of molecular foundations of life, Academician Dmitry Knorre, the corresponding resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences is published on the website of the Academy of Sciences.

As noted in the resolution, the award was awarded to Knorre "for outstanding contribution in the field of nucleic acid chemistry, affine modification of biopolymers, the formation of the most important direction of pharmacology – therapeutic nucleic acids and the development of gene therapy methods."

Gene therapy is a medical approach based on the introduction of genetic constructs into the cells of the body for the treatment of various diseases.

Dmitry Georgievich Knorre (b. 1926) is a specialist in the field of bioorganic chemistry of nucleic acids and proteins, the founder of research in the field of molecular biology, bioorganic chemistry and biochemistry at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Director-organizer (1983-1984), Director (1983-1996), Chief Researcher (since 1996) of the Novosibirsk Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry SB RAS (since 2003 – Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine SB RAS). Currently, he is an adviser to the Russian Academy of Sciences.

He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Badge of Honor (twice), the Order of Honor and the October Revolution. Laureate of the Lenin Prize and the prize of the Government of the Russian Federation.

The Lomonosov Grand Gold Medal for 2016 was also awarded to Nobel Laureate Professor Sidney Altman (USA) "for outstanding contributions in the field of nucleic acid biochemistry, the discovery of the catalytic activity of nucleic acids and the creation of new biologically active substances."

The medal has been awarded annually since 1959 to one Russian and one foreign scientist for outstanding work in the field of natural sciences and humanities. By tradition, the award is presented to the laureates at the annual General Meeting of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
