Grief does not turn gray

Women turn gray not from nerves, but from genes, scientists have found
NEWSru.comScientists of the British company Unilever, having conducted a global study, came to the conclusion that the cause of gray hair in women is a genetic predisposition, not a lifestyle.

Previously, versions were put forward that the amount of gray hair can be influenced by factors unfavorable to the body, such as stress or diet.

The researchers studied more than 200 identical and fraternal female twins from Denmark, aged 59 to 81 years, according to the BBC. The number of gray hairs in identical twins was exactly the same, despite the different lifestyle they led. In fraternal twins, the degree of gray hair was different, because there was a different set of genes.

The study, in which gray hair is explained by genetic factors, was published in the journal PLoS One. At the same time, according to researchers, thinning with age of the hair on the crown is caused, among other things, by environmental reasons and is associated with lifestyle.

According to the head of the research team, Dr. David Gunn, many theories have been put forward so far, but no such global experiments have been conducted. According to him, the new work of scientists explains the reasons why women turn gray. Thus, it turned out that environmental factors are not as important as previously thought.

Accordingly, it is now clear that no matter how stressful and stressful a woman's life may be, she will not turn gray for this reason. According to Nina Goad, a member of the British Association of Dermatologists, a previous study also found a slight environmental impact on gray hair. Thus, the process of graying is out of your control, you cannot regulate it or slow it down, since it is determined by an innate set of genes, experts say.

According to experts, however, there are exceptions to this rule. So, according to Dr. David Fisher, who deals with the problems of oncology, there is evidence that in some cases the effects of chemicals on the human body accelerated the process of graying.

Recall that the secret of gray hair was revealed 5 years ago. Then, in the course of skin cancer research, American scientists accidentally discovered why people's hair turns gray.

As it turned out, human hair is protected from gray by stem cells. When they are not enough, the hair begins to turn gray. Scientists have investigated the mechanisms by which hair has color and which are based on the action of melanocytes. These cells produce a natural pigment present in the skin, melanin. The pigment merges in the cells that form the hair with keratinocytes. Melanocytes are produced and updated continuously due to the stock of stem cells at the base of the hair follicle.

Adult stem cells reproduce, while some of the melanocytes produced by the remaining stem cells are sent to the wrong sector of the follicle. Thus, they fail to give color to keratinocytes.
