During a visit to the Russian Academy of Sciences by American biologist James Watson, a ceremony will be held to return him the Nobel medal for the discovery of the DNA double helix, which was bought at auction by the founder of USM Holdings and well-known philanthropist Alisher Usmanov.

The meeting with the scientist and the transfer of the Nobel prize will be attended by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Fortov, reports TASS.

In 2014, Watson decided to sell his Nobel medal in order to use some of the money himself, and give some to various universities and research institutes to finance scientific research. In December 2014, at Christie's auction, the medal was sold for $ 4.8 million. Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov bought it with the intention of returning it to the owner.

Recall that the 86-year-old Watson became the first ever Nobel Prize winner who decided to sell his award. The scientist said that he would spend the funds received on charity. Watson received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1962 together with his colleagues Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins for discovering the structure of the DNA molecule.

In recent years, he has been searching for effective methods of treating oncological diseases. Now science has a chance to defeat this terrible disease, the scientist believes.
