My Neanderthal great-great-great-grandmother

All non-Africans were recognized as descendants of Neanderthals<url>
All people of non-African descent are descendants of Neanderthals.

This conclusion was reached by scientists who analyzed the X chromosomes of people from a large number of different countries. The work of scientists (Yotova et al., An X-Linked Haplotype of Neanderthal Origin Is Present Among All Non-African Populations) is published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, and its summary is provided by the Discovery News portal (All Non-Africans Part Neanderthal, Genetics Confirm).

Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens are closely related species, and scientists have long believed that they could interbreed with each other. Both species originated in Africa. It is believed that the ancestors of H.neanderthalensis left this continent in the period from 400 thousand to 800 thousand years ago. At the same time, the ancestors of H.sapiens came out of Africa and began to settle in other territories between 80 thousand and 50 thousand years ago. Accordingly, until the disappearance of the Neanderthals about 30 thousand years ago, the two species coexisted together for a long time.

The authors of the new work checked whether modern humans and Neanderthals mixed together by examining the DNA sequence of the female sex chromosome in residents of all five continents. In total, the researchers analyzed 6,092 chromosomes and determined that on average, the X chromosome of modern people of non-African origin contains about nine percent of Neanderthal DNA. These results indicate that H.neanderthalensis and H.sapiens interbred with each other after both species left Africa.

The results of the new work confirm the results of previous studies – based on the results of deciphering the complete DNA sequence of the Neanderthal, scientists led by Svante Paabo concluded that H.neanderthalensis mixed with modern humans.
