Nanotechnology – a breakthrough into the future: the results of the Olympiad

The solemn ceremony of awarding the winners of the III All-Russian Internet Olympiad "Nanotechnology – a Breakthrough into the Future" was held on May 6, 2009. The organizers of the Olympiad were Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Russian Nanotechnology Corporation (RUSNANO).

Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences and representatives of the State Duma took part in the closing ceremony under the chairmanship of the Rector of Moscow State University, Academician Viktor Sadovnichy.

– For us, as a state corporation, the Olympiad is, first of all, the preparation of the personnel core – the potential for the nanoindustry being built in Russia. We are absolutely convinced that the demand for such qualifications will be very high," Anatoly Chubais said in his video message to the participants of the Olympiad. – I'm not saying this out of abstract assumptions, but based on the first few dozen projects that we are launching.

This year, almost six thousand participants from 49 cities of Russia and neighboring countries took part in the Olympiad, which is three times more than a year earlier. The winners received cash prizes and official diplomas, giving benefits for admission to many Russian universities. Five schoolchildren who entered Moscow State University based on the results of this Olympiad and connected their activities with nanotechnology will receive annual scholarships from RUSNANO for training. The main prize fund for the winners and prize-winners was: 30,000 rubles (1st place), 20,000 rubles (2nd place), 15,000 rubles. (3rd place) for each of the six thematic sections for students, postgraduates and young scientists.

– I really hope that talented schoolchildren, students and young scientists who took part in the Olympiad will continue to work in the field of nanotechnology in the future, and we will meet them again at the competition of young scientists held within the framework of the International Forum on Nanotechnology. During the Forum, which will be held this year from October 6 to 8, RUSNANO will present for the first time an International award in the field of nanotechnology for scientific and technical developments introduced into mass production," said Sergey Kalyuzhny, member of the Board of RUSNANO, Head of scientific and technical expertise.
