ISS astronauts will not be able to taste the first "printed" meat in orbit

RIA News

The crew of the International Space Station will not be able to try meat artificially "printed" in orbit for the first time, samples will be delivered to Earth for study, managing partner of the 3D Bioprinting Solutions 3D bioprinter company Yusef Hesuani told RIA Novosti.

The bioprinter was delivered to the ISS on December 3, 2018. It was possible to print small samples of human cartilage tissue and rodent thyroid gland on it. The organs that were collected in zero gravity from the cells delivered to the ISS were returned to Earth. Now they are being studied by specialists.

Hesuani later reported that in August the company would send synthetic materials based on ceramics to the station. In addition, by this time, another experiment may be ready – to assemble meat or fish from muscle cells.

"All the same things that we have already done with tissues on the ISS – we will do the same with muscles," Hesuani said.

At the same time, he added that the meat samples will be as compact as in the experiment held in December – about a few millimeters (maybe a few centimeters). In order to obtain larger cell constructs, additional equipment will be required.
