Scientists: Alcohol causes seven types of cancer

Dr. Peter

Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for the development of seven types of cancer, scientists from the University of Otago in New Zealand said. At the same time, even people who drink alcohol moderately are in danger.

In a study published in the scientific journal Addiction (Jennie Connor, Alcohol consumption as a cause of cancer), scientists conclude that there is not just a statistical relationship between alcohol and cancer. According to the researchers, there is convincing evidence to believe that alcohol consumption is sometimes a direct cause of cancer.

Scientists have analyzed the results of scientific papers and reviews of the World Cancer Research Foundation over the past 10 years. They found that in 2012 alone, alcohol caused about half a million cancer deaths (5.8% of cancer deaths worldwide). In addition, the researchers concluded that alcohol causes at least seven types of malignant tumors - the oropharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast.

According to the head of the study, Jenny Connor, there is no safe level of alcohol consumption when it comes to the development of cancer. However, the most at risk are people who drink alcohol immoderately – in large quantities exceeding 50 grams per day.
