RUSNANO Nanotechnology Dictionary

The first stage of creating an electronic dictionary of nanotechnology terms has been completed. The RUSNANO website contains over 400 articles describing the basic concepts and phenomena of the world of nanotechnology.

40 authors from leading research institutes and universities worked on the creation of the first edition of the dictionary. To date, the editorial board has approved 406 terms. Another 141 articles will be finalized and published by the end of the year. And next year the number of dictionary entries will approach 1000.

"When creating the dictionary, we tried to write dictionary entries in such a way as to avoid particularly narrow terms or unnecessarily delve into details. The dictionary, in our opinion, should give a general idea of the terms and provide links where a more educated reader can find a more detailed description of them," said Sergey Kalyuzhny, Director of the Department of Scientific and Technical Expertise, member of the Board of RUSNANO.

Due to the fact that nanotechnology is developing very dynamically, the terms that have appeared in the English-language literature do not always have a well-established meaning in the Russian language. Therefore, each dictionary entry is provided with an English spelling of the term, contains a list of synonyms and related definitions. The dictionary is open, which means that already published articles will be corrected and finalized taking into account suggestions and comments that will be expressed by users.

"In such an interdisciplinary field as nanotechnology, concepts of almost all areas of human knowledge are used: physics, chemistry, biology, not to mention specific areas, of which there are many within the framework of the listed sciences. That is why, working in the field of nanotechnology, it is very often possible to hear the same term acquiring different meanings in the mouths of different people. It is very difficult to find a common language not only for businessmen and scientists. Sometimes scientists working in different fields of science cannot understand each other. Therefore, the creation of a dictionary of the main terms used in nanotechnology, written in a language understandable to the widest possible range of readers, is a very important stage both for the development of the Corporation's relations with scientists and businessmen, and for the formation of the nanoindustry as a whole," said Sergey Kalyuzhny.
