A third of Russians are genetically predisposed to suicide and depression

30 percent of Russians have a gene (it should be read "a certain single–nucleotide polymorphism in one of the genes" - VM), which is associated with a predisposition to depression and suicidal behavior, Interfax news agency reports with reference to a study by the medical company Genotek.

According to experts Genotek, genetic factors play a big role in the formation of depression. Indicators of heritability of depression are 37-38 percent. According to the company, in the world, 10 percent of all people who have sought help from doctors suffer from depression.

The company tested 2 thousand people 18-50 years old. 40% of them are women, 60% are men. They underwent a DNA test for predisposition to 149 multifactorial diseases of all organ systems.

Approximately 30 percent of the test subjects found the rs6265-T variant of the BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) gene. People with this gene variant are more likely than others to have depression, suicidal moods, introversion and attention deficit disorder. In 27 percent of carriers of the BDNF gene, the rs6265-T variant was found in one of its copies. The researchers note that people with this variant, on average, are no worse at coping with tasks than carriers of rs6265-CC (another variant of BDNF). The latter have a low and medium predisposition to depression, they quickly solve problems and make decisions.

The BDNF gene stimulates and supports the development of neurons and the formation of synapses. It acts on some parts of the central and peripheral nervous systems, helps emerging neurons survive, increases the number and differentiation of new neurons and synapses. The gene is important for long-term memory and normal functioning of the nervous system. Mutations of this gene lead to increased mental sensitivity and sometimes to developmental brain defects.
