Scandal in the family of painkillers

According to the March 10 edition of Scientific American, anesthesiologist Scott Reuben is accused of having fabricated the results of at least 21 clinical trials of painkillers over the past 12 years, including Celebrex/Celebrex (celecoxib, Pfizer), Lyrica/Lyrica (pregabalin, Pfizer"), Bextra/Bextra (valdecoxib, Pfizer) and Neurontin/Neurontin (gabapentin, Pfizer), Vioxx (rofecoxib, Merck &Co.), as well as the antidepressant Effexor XR/Effexor (venlafaxine, Wyeth).

The management of Baystate Medical Center, where the doctor worked, asked the medical journals in which the results of these studies were published to officially withdraw all materials prepared with the participation of S. Reuben.

The head of the scientific department of the hospital at Baystate Medical Center, Hal Jenson, said that the assumption of falsification of the results arose during a standard review of the summary of S. Reuben's research in May last year, when it was discovered that the results of a test were published in a scientific journal, the conduct of which was not approved by the internal supervisory board of the hospital. Subsequently, it turned out that such a case is not the only one, and, as noted by H. Jenson, only S. Reuben is solely responsible for falsifying research data. Currently, S. Reuben is suspended from his duties indefinitely, Scientific American reports.

Commenting on this event, Pfizer Corporation stated that it was not involved in any way in the course of any of these independent studies, as well as the interpretation or publication of their results. The company covered part of the costs of S. Reuben's research between 2002 and 2007 for drugs such as Celebrex, Lyrica and Neurontin. Pfizer representative Sally Botty noted that the data obtained by S. Reuben were not included in the clinical studies of Celebrex and Lyrica, on the basis of which these drugs were approved in the United States for use in pain syndrome.

Steven Shafer, editor-in-chief of the journal "Anesthesia & Analgesia", in which the results of 10 of all the fabricated studies of S. Reuben were published, said that there are millions of patients undergoing postoperative pain therapy in the world who are concerned about the above fact.
