Counterfeit medicines are imported to the EU countries from China and India and, as a rule, contain inaccurate dosages of active substances and incorrect ingredients.

And the American non-governmental research group The Center for Medicine in the Public Interest estimated the global traffic volume of counterfeit medicines for 2010 at 55 billion euros, with an increase of 90 percent over five years. A study conducted in 2010, sponsored by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, showed that the European counterfeit drug market alone is estimated at about 10.5 billion euros.
