Police officers from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary and the United Kingdom participated in the operation. As a result, in addition to several million pills of fake Viagra, a large amount of cash and several expensive cars, including luxury models, were confiscated. In addition, more than 7.5 million euros were frozen on the suspects' bank accounts and deposits.

Counterfeit medicines are imported to the EU countries from China and India and, as a rule, contain inaccurate dosages of active substances and incorrect ingredients.

Thus, according to the European Alliance for Access to Safe Medicines, in 2011, 62 percent of drugs purchased via the Internet were counterfeit. And the American non-governmental research group The Center for Medicine in the Public Interest estimated the global traffic volume of counterfeit medicines for 2010 at 55 billion euros, with an increase of 90 percent over five years. A study conducted in 2010, sponsored by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, showed that the European counterfeit drug market alone is estimated at about 10.5 billion euros.
