The cause of death of the 76-year-old Frenchman, who lived 2.5 months after Carmat artificial heart transplantation, was a short circuit in the mechanism, the Journal Du Dimanche reports.

According to the chief developer of the project and the surgeon who performed the operation, Alain Carpentier, at the moment all further clinical trials of the artificial heart Carmat have been suspended until the causes of the malfunction of the mechanism are clarified.

"It may take several more weeks to fully and accurately understand the causes of the malfunction in the artificial organ," commented Alain Carpentier. The scientist also noted that, according to his forecasts, the life expectancy of the first recipient should have been only 30 days, but the patient lived 75 days after Carmat artificial heart transplantation.

Three more French patients who are in the terminal stage of heart failure are currently awaiting the installation of an artificial heart. However, scientists intend to determine what exactly caused the short circuit in the artificial heart, which was designed for at least 5 years of uninterrupted operation, for this reason, the previously planned Carmat heart transplant operations have been postponed at the moment.
