Regular exercise reduces the risk of premature death in patients who have had a heart attack, according to Swedish doctors. Their study was presented at the congress of the European Society of Cardiology, a press release of the work was published on the Eurekalert portal (Exercise after a heart attack -- it could save your life).

Experts analyzed the data of more than 22 thousand people who survived a myocardial infarction in the period from 2005 to 2013. Doctors assessed the level of physical activity of patients twice – six to ten weeks and 12 months after a heart attack. In each case, the volunteers were asked how often they had done physical exercises lasting at least 30 minutes over the past seven days. This allowed the doctors to determine how the load on the muscles changed after a heart attack. Then the subjects were divided into groups depending on the intensity of training.

The study showed that an average of 1087 people who had a heart attack died in 4.2 years. At the same time, in comparison with physically inactive patients, participants with "reduced", "increased" and "constant" physical activity had a lower risk of death by 37%, 51% and 59%, respectively.

"Exercising more than twice a week should be on the list of recommendations for heart attack survivors along with quitting smoking, diet and stress reduction. Our study shows that this advice is applicable to all cores," said the study's lead author, Dr. Oryan Ekblom.
