RIA News

The Onkorobot system will appear in Russia next year, the Izvestia newspaper writes with reference to a representative of the Central Research and Development Institute of Robotics and Technical Cybernetics (TsNII RTK).

"Specialized medical institutions are already showing interest in this development. The first prototype will be created by the end of 2018, its tests will last for about another year," the material says. The robot surgeon is designed for contact radiation therapy of prostate cancer.

"The control system will allow real-time control of the movement of a surgical instrument (intrastate needles) under the control of intra–tissue imaging based on ultrasound," project manager, Deputy Director of the Central Research Institute of RTK for Scientific Work Nikolay Gryaznov told Izvestia.

The device will be a manipulator with six degrees of mobility, with a mechanism for controlling the movement of the needle in the patient's soft tissues and an ultrasound imaging system. The system based on a personal computer will be able to work in manual, semi-automatic and automatic modes.

The Research and Production Association "Alloy", which is part of Rostec, can become a partner of the project. The Ministry of Education and Science added that they provide financial assistance to researchers, and noted that the new system can improve the effectiveness of cancer treatment.
