The Government has decided to develop the concept of a law on the use of stem cells

The Government Commission on High Technologies and Innovations, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister S.B. Ivanov, decided to develop the concept of a law on the use of stem cells

Vladimir Nikitich Yarygin, Chairman of the Coordinating Council for Cellular Technologies of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, spoke on behalf of the scientific community at the commission meeting. In his report, he presented an analysis of the state of affairs in the development of new stem cell technologies and tissue engineering. Dmitry Vadimovich, Head of the Stem Cell Genetics Laboratory of the State Medical and Genetic Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Director General of CJSC Remetex, D.B.N. Goldstein, added that "... stem cell technologies are breakthrough in the treatment of incurable diseases today, and for a number of genetic diseases they are almost an alternative form of treatment."

One of the main problems was also identified - the lack of a regulatory framework regulating the procedure for obtaining permission to conduct research, which actually stopped legitimate clinical trials in the field of cellular technologies in Russia.

The Government Commission on High Technologies and Innovations made decisions:

1) on the development of the concept of the law on the application of biomedical technologies in medical practice
2) on the establishment of a scientific center in the structure of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation
3) on the establishment of an Interdepartmental Council for the Development of the industry of High Biomedical Technologies.
