The right to die

California has become the fifth state in America to allow euthanasia

Vademecum

The law "On the Right to Die" adopted in October 2015 comes into force in California on June 9, 2016. Only adult, mentally sane patients will be able to use the "right to death" (California Becomes Fifth State to Allow Assisted Suicide).

The law gives the right to a medical professional to conduct euthanasia after three appeals of a seriously ill patient whose predicted life span does not exceed six months.

However, healthcare institutions, doctors and pharmacists are allowed to refuse to grant their patients the "right to die" for ethical reasons. A number of medical institutions, including Catholic hospitals and Adventist medical centers, have already refused to carry out the euthanasia procedure.

Religious figures oppose this bill. Reverend Richard Mouw noted that although the law indicates that it is impossible to use the "right to die" for suicide, this does not mean that eventually the number of people voluntarily choosing death will increase.

Euthanasia has also been legalized in Oregon, Washington, Montana and Vermont, but California has become the most populous state to allow medical care for passing away.

Earlier in the Netherlands, which legalized euthanasia in 2002, this right was extended to seriously ill children.
