The event was attended by more than 5,000 specialists, 500 lecturers and 30 foreign speakers from around the world. This year, the Russian Cancer Congress was held for the 20th time. The scientific program of the event was particularly rich: more than 90 scientific meetings and symposiums were held within the framework of the congress, as well as 3 joint sessions with international communities. New interactive forms of communication and discussion allowed the congress participants to exchange best practices and knowledge, as well as get new ideas and acquaintances. Every year, within the framework of the congress, special emphasis is placed on educational programs, the main task of the event is to provide up–to-date information and the state of the field of oncology, to give an objective assessment of what has happened in the field of world and Russian oncology for further implementation and use in practical work. In addition, the congress raised the most pressing problems of modern Russian oncology. Leading experts discussed the availability of modern methods of treatment, issues of underfunding, the state of cancer care in various regions of the country, the shortage of professional staff, screening and early diagnosis issues, the relevance of creating a national anti-cancer program.

Today, as the life expectancy of the population increases, malignant tumors come out on top among the causes of mortality. And despite the fact that the level of availability of oncological care has increased in Russia recently, the issue of adequate funding for the treatment and diagnosis of oncological diseases is catastrophically lagging behind the level of developed countries. Thus, according to the chairman of the Russian Society of Clinical Oncology, Professor Sergey Alekseevich Tyulyandin, according to the 2014 assessment, Russia is in the penultimate place in terms of state funding for healthcare. And by 2017, the situation will worsen, as healthcare costs will be reduced by another 30%.

The main topic for discussion was again the issue of creating a National anti-cancer program and a national cancer registry, which are designed to solve the issues of organizing the prevention and treatment of malignant tumors and will be able to regulate uniform standards for the treatment of cancer patients, the availability of qualified medical care in all regions of the Russian Federation. This program is being created at the initiative of the Russian Association of Oncologists and will be submitted to the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Russian Federation in the very near future.
