The Investigative Committee of Russia is replenishing a single database of DNA traces, which helps in solving crimes, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, General of Justice Alexander Bastrykin said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

According to him, now the possibilities of DNA studies of traces left at the scene play a key role in the detection and investigation of crimes, including the so-called serial ones.

"Experts of the Russian IC have accumulated positive experience of genotype isolation in traces containing trace amounts of biological material of the criminal, for example, in fat handprints on ropes, clothing and other surfaces unsuitable for traditional fingerprinting. As a result, handprints acquire additional opportunities for their use to establish the identity of the criminal," the head of the investigative department noted. Bastrykin stressed that this is very important, since handprints are removed at every third crime.

"We accumulate the received information into a single DNA record of the Investigative Committee. At the moment, according to the results of the examinations carried out, 31,988 genetic profiles of the persons being checked have been entered and checked into this account," the head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation said.

According to him, in practice it happens that after a long time the genetic data seized from the crime scene coincide with the data of a particular person undergoing another criminal case. "This year, as a result of checks on DNA records, the belonging of traces to 182 crimes has been established," Bastrykin said.

In addition, he said that there are several unsolved crimes for which biological traces were seized. When studying them and determining the identity of DNA profiles, it is possible to draw a conclusion about the serial nature of crimes. "This year we have established a match of DNA profiles of unknown criminals for 25 unsolved crimes, I am sure that their detention is a matter of time," the head of the RF IC stressed.
