Vitamins are different

Navitaminated
An independent American laboratory came to disappointing conclusions
Tatiana Bateneva, "News of Science"

An independent study conducted in the United States showed that in every third package of multivitamins there are either not enough of them, or, on the contrary, too many. And this is not safe for health.

In the spring, doctors especially strongly recommend taking multivitamins – over the winter, the body has exhausted itself, and new arrivals of natural vitamins from vegetables and fruits will not be soon. Moreover, many have a firm conviction that the best vitamins are those that are more expensive, for example, American.

Independent American Laboratory ConsumerLab.com I studied the most popular complexes of different price categories. And I found that almost every third package of multivitamins does not contain ingredients that correspond to the information on the package. And some of them were also contaminated with lead.

All three studied complexes for children were distinguished by an excess of vitamin A, folic and nicotinic acids and zinc. And one of the three contained as much as a triple dose of vitamin A. Even with a short intake period, this can lead to nausea and visual disturbances, and with prolonged use – cause bone fragility and liver problems. Excess nicotinic acid (vitamin B3) and zinc in children can cause itching, anemia and immune disorders.

Two of the three vitamin complexes for men did not meet the standards: one was contaminated with lead, the other was found to have excess folic acid, which increases the risk of prostate cancer. One of the four complexes for women contained almost two times less vitamin A than was written on the box. Even more "underinvestments" were found in one of the five complexes for the elderly and in one of the three for pregnant women.

Among the common multivitamins, only half of the recommended dose of folic acid was found in some, and half of the declared dose of calcium in others. And in one of the vitamin drinks, the folic acid content was 15 times higher than indicated on the label, so that only one bottle (330 ml) exceeded the maximum daily dose for adults and less than half a bottle – the dose for children.

The laboratory does not name brands of multivitamins, so it cannot be suspected of the ordered nature of the study. Just a reminder: not all that gold is expensive.
