Life expectancy in Russia is not increasing

The average life expectancy increased from 1990 to 2012 by only 2.5 months. Such data is provided by the World Health Organization, writes Kommersant.

Life expectancy in the country today is on average 69 years – as it was 24 years ago. At the same time, Russian men live for approximately 63 years. But women have slight improvements: their total increased by a year and amounted to 75 years.

It is reported that Russia has the lowest growth rates of life expectancy among high-income countries. Men live the longest in Iceland (81.2 years), Switzerland (80.7 years), Australia (80.5 years) and Israel (80.2 years). And women have the highest rates in Japan (87 years), Spain (85.1 years), Switzerland (85.1 years) and Singapore (85.1 years).

For comparison, they live the least in several African countries: Angola, Congo, Mozambique, Nigeria and other states. The average life expectancy there still does not exceed 55 years.

The main causes of mortality in Russia are non–communicable diseases, from which 790 people per 100 thousand of the population die. In other countries, this is also the most common factor, but among high-income countries, this indicator averages 397 deaths per 100,000 people.

However, the WHO report does not take into account data for 2013. The other day, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets said that life expectancy in Russia, according to the latest information, was just over 70 years, and in the coming years it may increase to 74 years.
