Japanese scientists have proven that coffee slows brain aging

Another proof of the positive effect of coffee on the body has been obtained. Studies by a group of scientists from the University of Tsukuba (Japan) have proved that the plant alkaloid trigonelline contained in the drink slows down aging and improves memory.

The experiments were conducted on mice. The rodents received 5 mg (per kilogram of weight) of trigonelline daily, and after a month they showed improvement of cognitive functions, including spatial memory. During control tests, the mice became better oriented and faster to get out of the Morris maze.

In addition, instrumental studies of the animals' brains showed that trigonelline had a positive effect on the nervous system, mitochondrial functions, increased ATP synthesis and significantly reduced the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines (chronic inflammation - one of the factors that accelerate aging).

"Of course, trigonelline is not only found in coffee, but also in fenugreek, Japanese radish. But a cup of a fragrant drink seems more accessible and pleasant," - commented doctor-endocrinologist of the clinic of Moscow State University, Doctor of Medical Sciences Zuhra Pavlova.

She reminded that coffee has many other proven beneficial properties, confirmed by research. Thanks to caffeine, it makes workouts more effective and helps fight extra pounds; protects against irritable bowel syndrome; and reduces the risk of migraines.

"️Coffee keeps us young and makes our lives more enjoyable in many ways. This is provided that you drink coffee not in liters, without milk, sugar, syrups and other not very useful additives", - concluded the endocrinologist.
