The Government of Kazakhstan intends to tighten responsibility for human cloning, the relevant amendments to the legislation on genetic engineering were presented on Friday by the Ministry of Education and Science in the Majilis (lower house of Parliament.

"Human cloning is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years with or without deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to two years," follows from the draft law submitted by the Ministry of Education.

"The same act committed by a group of persons, or a group of persons by prior agreement, or an organized group, or repeatedly, is punishable by imprisonment for a term of four to seven years with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to three years or without it," the document states.

The norm providing for these types of punishments will be introduced into the Criminal Code. According to the developers' explanation, "this article is included in order to establish criminal penalties at the legislative level for violating the legislation on genetic engineering activities."
