Paid donation is legalized

The United States of America has become the first country to take a step towards legalizing donation, capable of saving thousands of terminally ill patients. msnbc was one of the first to report this news: Bone marrow donors may be compensated after ruling stands.

Attorney General Eric Holder finally approved the decision of the Federal Court, issued at the end of 2011, according to which patients with leukemia – bone marrow cancer – can now buy the biological material necessary for transplantation from a donor.

The court also set a price for such a transaction – $ 3,000 and a condition according to which doctors are required to use a procedure called apheresis – during its implementation, extracorporeal separation of blood components takes place.

Thanks to this technique, doctors can get stem cells directly from human blood; previously, a painful puncture was taken with needles from the iliac bone of the pelvis.

Thus, it was decided that with such an intervention, the fluid is extracted rather than the organ.

The decision of the US authorities was a response to a class-action lawsuit filed by several families of leukemia patients against a 1984 Federal law prohibiting the sale and purchase of organs for surgery.

The interests of the group were represented by lawyer Doreen Flynn, whose three daughters suffer from a rare blood disease and need urgent bone marrow transplantation.

According to the human rights activist, hundreds of cancer patients die without waiting for their turn for surgery, so patients should be entitled to pay for donor services.

At the moment, the revolutionary permission for paid donation applies to only nine US states that fall under the jurisdiction of the court.

According to the latest data, about 114,000 people in the country need an organ transplant operation, while only 3,300 donors are officially registered.
