Resuscitation? Thank you, colleagues, no need!

American doctors choose not to resuscitate

News from Reuters Health: Most doctors wouldn't want intensive care at the end of lifeMost American doctors prefer to refuse resuscitation measures if they are required at the end of their own lives, and the opinion of doctors on this matter has not changed in general over the past more than 20 years.

These are the results of a survey conducted by a group of specialists from the Stanford University School of Medicine. The work was published in the journal PLOS ONE (Do Until Others: Doctors' Personal End-of-Life Resuscitation Preferences and Their Attitudes toward Advance Directives).

In 2013, the authors of the study interviewed more than a thousand young doctors who had just completed training in various medical specialties for their attitude to artificial prolongation of their lives using intensive care methods, and compared the results with data from a similar survey conducted in 1989, a year before the legislative act prescribing medical institutions came into force in the United States it is mandatory to find out the intentions of patients regarding resuscitation measures, if necessary, as well as organ donation.

As in 23 years before, the absolute majority of respondents (about nine out of ten) stated that they choose not to resuscitate at the end of life and expressed their willingness to become organ donors. "During our practice and training, we see that often resuscitation measures only prolong the process of dying and make it more painful," lead author of the study Vyjeyanthi Periyakoil commented on the results in an interview with Reuters Health, noting that she was not at all surprised by the personal position of doctors on this issue.
