The Path of Mercy

The Holy Father received the award of the Russian medical community

Every year for 4 years, the community of medical specialists involved in pediatric transplantation has been giving out the national award "The Way of Mercy" to people who have made a great contribution to the development of this direction, which is very poorly represented in our country. This year, the award was awarded to the staff of the Pediatric Vatican Clinic of the Infant Jesus (Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesu), as well as its curator, His Holiness Father Francis.

The clinic was founded by private investors Princes Scipiatti in 1869 for the treatment of poor children in Rome. Then it was the first clinic for children in Italy. In 1924, the clinic was placed under the administration of the Holy See. She is currently under the personal control of the Pope. Today, the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesu Clinic is the leading pediatric institution in Italy and one of the best pediatric transplant centers in Europe.

For many years, the Infant Jesus Clinic has been cooperating with Professor Mikhail Kaabak, head of the pediatric transplantation program at the Russian Scientific Surgery Center named after Academician B.V. Petrovsky. Surgeons of the Italian clinic come to Russia every year to teach Russian doctors for free how to guide children before and after transplantation. Italian colleagues take the most difficult and difficult children to the Vatican clinic and operate on them there. This is an example when the leading pediatric transplant surgeon Jean de Ville de Goye performed a liver and kidney transplant sequentially to a girl with congenital oxaluria.

Besides Professor de Goye, his colleagues – Francesco Emma, Luca Dello Strologo, Stefano Picca - were awarded for their huge contribution to the development of pediatric transplantation. Pope Francis also received the award of the medical community in absentia. The father personally oversees the work of the clinic, visits it and meets with young patients. The doctors of the clinic say that in the most severe medical cases they enjoy a special privilege – they can personally ask for the prayer of the Holy Father for a sick child.

The help of the staff of the Infant Jesus clinic to Russian children is invaluable, the results of helping extremely difficult children are amazing. It should be recalled that pediatric transplantation in our country is extremely rare, since the removal of organs from children after death is possible only with the consent of parents, who in most cases do not consider such a possibility. This leads to the fact that a large number of children are disabled, do not live to adulthood, suffer severely.
