New drug blocks the most aggressive strains of SARS-CoV-2

Experiments have shown that the drug triggers an innate immune response and significantly reduces the level of viral load in the body, preventing the risks of severe complications. It also inhibits other respiratory viruses and may very likely be effective against future coronaviruses.

The team from The University of Pennsylvania has shown that the drug diABZI, which stimulates the synthesis of interferon in the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract, blocks the replication of several variants of SARS-CoV-2 in mice, including the South African variant B.1.351. It is believed that B.1.351 is about twice as contagious as other variants of SARS-CoV-2 and increases the risk of re-infection.

diABZI is currently being studied in clinical trials for the treatment of certain types of cancer. Scientists have identified its potential against COVID-19 due to the fact that it is able to trigger the necessary immune response in the cells of the respiratory tract. It was identified among 75 other drugs of similar action, according to a press release from Penn researchers discover drug that blocks multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants in mice.

Article by Li et al. Pharmacological activation of STING blocks SARS-CoV-2 infection is published in the journal Science Immunology – VM.

Experiments on mouse models have shown that when administered through the nose, diABZI significantly reduced the viral load in the lungs and respiratory tract and stimulated the immune response to the pathogen.

Further experiments on human cells demonstrated that diABZI also inhibits parainfluenza and rhinovirus.

According to study author Sarah Cherry, the results indicate the potential of diABZI as a COVID-19 therapy at an early stage, which is able to reduce severe symptoms and prevent complications.

"SARS-CoV-2 will not be the last coronavirus (causing major outbreaks) and therefore we will still need new tools for protection. For this reason, we continue testing diABZI against many other viruses," she concluded.
