Endosurgery against diabetes

New therapy will allow diabetics to give up insulin

Researchers from the Netherlands have tested a new, minimally invasive procedure for rejuvenation of the inner walls of the duodenum in combination with daily intake of a drug that lowers glucose levels and minor lifestyle changes. It turned out that revolutionary therapy using endoscopy can lead to the cessation of insulin intake among a significant number of patients suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Specialists from The University of Amsterdam has developed a set of measures to help patients with type 2 diabetes to refuse insulin injections. A minimally invasive method of restoring the duodenal mucosa (Duodenal Mucosal Resurfacing, DMR) is performed on an outpatient basis through a special guided catheter that ablates the treated area.

Although the background of the process is not completely clear, the cells of the mucous membrane undergo changes as a result of eating junk food with a high fat and sugar content. This leads to changes in the production of key hormones that affect insulin resistance. The restoration of the mucosa rejuvenates cells and allows the body to resist diabetes more effectively, writes EurekAlert.

The level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), a parameter of long—term glucose control, decreased in these participants of experimental treatment to 7.5% or less. After 12 months, it fell to 6.7%.

(HbA1c values from 4 to 5.9% are considered normal - VM.)

Patients who underwent therapy noted a significant decrease in body mass index: on average from 29.8 at the beginning of the study to 25.5 a year later. The proportion of fat in the liver also decreased from 8.1% to 4.6% after six months.

A quarter of patients who did not respond to treatment to such an extent were able to reduce the dose of insulin by more than half, from 35 units per day to 17 units per day, after 12 months.

Scientists are confident that this therapy can be a breakthrough in the treatment of metabolic syndrome. And they hope that soon a major study will be conducted in Europe that will confirm the effectiveness of DMR.
