Helping dendritic cells

A molecule has been found in the body that enhances immunity against cancer

Immunotherapy can be improved with a single molecule, and it is produced naturally. This molecule cured mice of cancer completely.

Scientists from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) have proved that cancer treatments that use immune cells to attack a tumor can be improved with the antimicrobial peptide LL-37. It is produced by the body naturally in response to infections and helps to kill foreign bacteria and viruses, writes EurekAlert.

Article by Findlay et al. Exposure to the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 produces dendritic cells optimized for immunotherapy is published in the journal OncoImmunology – VM.

The team found that LL-37 enhances the function of specific immune cells, dendritic cells, which are responsible for targeted immune responses.

Thus, dendritic cells are used in cancer immunotherapy because they contribute to other immune cells in the fight against the tumor.

Such methods of influencing cancer include taking samples of the patient's cells and culturing them in the laboratory. This is a complex and expensive process, which, among other things, is complicated by the preparation of a sufficient number of cells to fight malignant cells in the body.

It turned out that the addition of LL-37 to dendritic cells during their cultivation in the laboratory increases the production of cells that can be used for treatment.

In experiments with mice, the therapy reduced tumors, and in some cases even completely cured rodents of cancer.

The authors suggest that a similar effect can be achieved for human cells. The research will continue. "We hope that the results will open up new opportunities for a number of cancer immunotherapy methods, which today have some obstacles to effective clinical application," concluded scientist Emily Gwyer Findlay.

Recently, American scientists have found an unlimited source of "raw materials" for cancer and HIV immunotherapy. To do this, the cells are grown in the organoid of the thymus.
