A way has been found to predict the outcome of rheumatoid arthritis treatment

Svetlana Maslova, Hi-tech+

It is believed that up to 50% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis do not respond to medications prescribed by their doctor. Usually it turns out after a few months, when precious time is lost, and the symptoms progress. A new blood test developed by scientists from the UK promises to solve this problem.

Scientists from Queen Mary University of London has identified blood biomarkers that can predict a patient's reaction to the drug. Today, many patients do not respond to treatment and, in addition to the lack of benefits, harm the body with side effects. This complicates their condition in general and contributes to the progression of debilitating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis – pain and inflammation.

The test analyzes the levels of certain molecules in the blood that are involved in the regulation of inflammation, writes EurekAlert. It was possible to determine these indicators with the help of artificial intelligence. He was trained on blood samples from patients who either showed a positive reaction to treatment or not.

Biomarker levels made it possible to predict the effect of treatment with an accuracy of up to 89%, observations showed.

Among the most informative molecules were RvD4, 10S, 17S-diHDPA, 15R-LXA4 and MaR1n-3 DPA, which allowed us to assess the degree of response to treatment, as well as the subtype of the disease. Their assessment will help to identify those people to whom standard medications are highly likely not to benefit, so that the doctor can immediately adjust the treatment regimen from the moment of diagnosis.

Now scientists plan to confirm the results on a larger sample of patients in order to start using the test in clinical practice.
