The results of the third phase of clinical trials of psychotherapy of post-traumatic stress disorder using MDMA have been announced. After a 12-week course of therapy under the supervision of doctors, 67% of chronic patients completely got rid of PTSD. This is the first such experiment in The United States. It sets the stage for the decision that the FDA is to take in 2023 regarding the medical legalization of psychedelic drugs.

For several decades, the Interdisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Research (MAPS) has been working on the possibility of using MDMA in the psychotherapy of severe cases of PTSD. Now the Association has prepared for publication in the journal Nature Medicine the results of the third phase of clinical trials.

The press release of MAPS’ Phase 3 Trial of MDMA-Assisted Therapy for PTSD Achieves Successful Results for Patients with Severe, Chronic PTSD is published on the MAPS website.

The experiment involved 90 patients with severe, chronic PTSD that developed as a result of various causes (abuse, war, sexual trauma). All patients underwent a 12-week treatment program consisting of three MDMA sessions plus weekly therapeutic meetings.

As in the first two phases, there were no serious side effects other than short-term, mild symptoms such as nausea or sweating. Two months after the end of the program, the participants underwent an independent examination of the severity of symptoms. As it turned out, 67% of those who were in the MDMA group no longer fell under the diagnosis of PTSD. Among the placebo group, there were 32% of them.

The researchers emphasize that the participants suffered from PTSD for an average of 14 years and showed poor susceptibility to modern methods of treatment.

MAPS expects to receive FDA approval to release the first medical psychedelic for sale in 2023.

In addition to PTSD, researchers suggest using MDMA to treat alcoholism, eating disorders, anxiety, and also use it as a supplement in family therapy.
