The new drug was named metabocin (Metabocin). The drug was tested on mice whose diet was dominated by saturated fat food. The scientists will present the results of their work at the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior in Florida (Anti-obesity drug derived from chili peppers shows promise in animal trials).
Metabocin interacts with the TRPV1 receptor, this protein is best known as part of the body temperature regulation and pain perception systems, including the burning sensation caused by capsaicin. In addition, it is present on the membranes of adipose tissue cells, adipocytes. Capsaicin in the composition of the new drug activates this receptor, affecting the cells of white adipose tissue – this type includes most of the fat in the human body. Under the influence of capsaicin, white tissue begins to degenerate into another type of fat – brown adipose tissue. This type of tissue protects the body from hypothermia, contributing to the release of heat. According to scientists, the same process allows you to burn fat without allowing excess white tissue to be deposited.
The drug was tested on laboratory mice that were fed high-calorie food. Metabocin was added to animal feed for eight months. The remedy did not force the mice to eat less, but at the same time restrained the gain of excess weight. In addition, metabocin prevented the growth of glucose, alanine aminotransferase and cholesterol levels in the blood – with obesity, the concentration of these substances in the blood increases. The drug did not cause noticeable side effects in rodents.
The researchers emphasize that although capsaicin was effective, spicy food seasoned with pepper cannot be considered an independent means for weight loss. Most of the capsaicin coming from food is not absorbed by the body, so spicy dishes cannot replace other ways of losing weight. The substance in the composition of the drug was specially modified so that it effectively affects the receptors.
