A new contraceptive delivery system has been developed by American scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. They created a capsule to load birth control pills into it. It is enough to take it once a month to prevent unwanted pregnancy.

After ingestion, the capsule opens in the stomach in the form of a star and a gradual process of drug release begins during the cycle.

Scientists have achieved a constant release rate, which provides controlled protection for a month. Experiments on pigs have shown that in terms of the concentration of the drug, this technique is completely similar to taking pills daily.

At the end of the month, the capsule is destroyed and excreted from the body through the digestive tract. Now scientists are working on several ways to most effectively destroy, including by changing the pH, temperature or using certain chemicals.

"A single oral contraceptive intake per month will provide women with an effective way of family planning. First of all, in developing countries with a high percentage of unwanted pregnancies," the authors said.

The developers have already received a grant of $13 million for further research. The technology will be tested on humans within three to five years.
