- Noninvasive method of tumor localization
Many researchers have already tried to create similar methods of analysis to determine the presence of cancer. But the method of the team from Sweden is based on a slightly different approach.
The researchers focused on how tumors change the RNA profile of platelets, in fact, leaving an imprint of the tumor process in the blood. By identifying such altered platelets ("Tumors" educate”platelets, TEPs"), scientists hope to identify not only the presence of cancer, but also the location of the disease in the body.

The tests were carried out on blood samples taken from 283 patients, 228 of them suffered from some form of cancer. The analysis helped to determine the presence of cancer in 96% of cases, and the origin of the tumor was detected with 71% accuracy.
The study also demonstrated molecular pathways for the development of various cancers, information about which doctors can use to best choose a treatment strategy for each individual patient.
"The ability to detect cancer at an early stage is vital," says Jonas Nilsson, one of the co-authors of the study. – We have studied how a new blood test method can be used to detect cancer. It is possible that in the future doctors will not need to take tissue samples, for example, when diagnosing lung cancer. Our study has helped to identify almost all forms of lung cancer and has great potential for improving the methods of early detection of oncological diseases."
A scientific article on the development of the Swedes was published by the journal Cancer Cell (Best et al., RNA-Seq of Tumor-Educated Platelets Enables Blood-Based Pan-Cancer, Multiclass, and Molecular Pathway Cancer Diagnostics).
