Scientists at the Salk Institute in the USA have discovered that potential drugs against senile dementia and Alzheimer's disease – CMS121 and J147 – are able to slow down aging in healthy mice by blocking damage to brain cells. This is reported in the press release of Alzheimer's drug candidates reverse broader aging, study shows.

Article by Currais et al. Elevating acetyl-CoA levels reduces aspects of brain aging is published in the journal eLife – VM.

In the experiment, a line of mice was used, which is characterized by rapid aging. An experimental group of rodents were given CMS121 or J147 – substances based on plant compounds that are able to support the functions of neurons during aging or Alzheimer's disease. The age of the animals at the time of treatment was nine months, which is equivalent to the late average age in humans. Four months later, the mice were tested for behavior and memory, as well as analyzed genetic and molecular markers in the brain.

In the experimental group, mice showed better results in memory tests than animals that did not receive drugs. They also showed changes at the cellular and molecular levels. For example, the activity of genes associated with mitochondria – energy-producing cellular organelles - remained stable.

It turned out that the drugs increase the levels of acetyl enzyme A, which is important for metabolism, which improves the functioning of mitochondria and slows down the processes in brain cells that contribute to aging.
