Resveratrol will help cure cancer

Resveratrol helps against cancer again

Resveratrol contained in grapes and wine is now so popular among biochemists and molecular biologists, so many articles have been devoted to it that it seems that everyone already knows what kind of substance it is and what it is remarkable for. In short, resveratrol is usually discussed in connection with sirtuins – special proteins that at one time enjoyed the reputation of "sources of eternal youth", but then this feature of them faded somewhat.

The activators of sirtuins are believed to be fasting and resveratrol: it is these factors that are most often discussed in connection with the slowing down of aging by the sirtuin mechanism. I must say that recently the reputation of the Sirtuins has gone up again, so that both they and their activators are again receiving increased attention from scientists.

So experts from the University of Missouri at Columbia (USA) report that they have managed to benefit from resveratrol also in the treatment of cancer. This substance, as it turned out, makes cancer cells more vulnerable to radiotherapy.

However, the anticancer properties of resveratrol have been known for a long time – however, they were observed again in animal experiments, in which they did not affect all types of cancer. Let's say resveratrol was useless against melanoma. But in an article by Michael Nicholl and his colleagues published in the Journal of Surgical Research (Fang et al., A potential role for resveratrol as a radiation sensitizer for melanoma treatment), we are talking about melanoma.

Dividing Human melanoma cells (photo by wellcome images)By itself, resveratrol destroyed 44% of cells.

If, after treatment, the cells were also irradiated, then the proportion of deaths reached 65%. According to the researchers, treatment with this substance could greatly help in the fight against metastases, to which melanoma is quite prone.

Similar results were previously obtained by the same scientific group on prostate cancer cells. That is, resveratrol can indeed become an effective weapon against various types of cancer – especially in conjunction with other types of cancer therapy. But do not forget that the study was conducted on cell culture, and its authors have yet to think about how to ensure the delivery of resveratrol to tumor cells. However, it does not appear to be particularly toxic to healthy tissues – after all, it is one of the most famous components of wine...
