The drug is based on a combination of two signaling proteins that bind to gp130. The hybrid artificial protein was named IC7Fc. When administered to rats suffering from obesity, the experimental drug reduced the concentration of blood sugar, appetite and weight. In addition, the experimental animals increased bone mass and decreased the accumulation of fat in the liver.
Weight loss occurred due to a decrease in the proportion of fat. Individuals from the control group who received a reduced diet also lost weight, but they lost both fat and muscle mass.
According to scientists, none of the known drugs for diabetes has such a beneficial effect on diabetes and metabolism. It will be especially effective for the elderly.
Since the drug is based on protein, it will need to be injected, and not taken in the form of tablets. However, this should be done only once a week.
The first experiments on monkeys confirmed the results obtained on rodents. Now clinical trials with human participation are next in line.
