Membrane protein research has found an investor

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (National Research University) and the ONEXIM Group announced the launch of a joint project to create a laboratory "Advanced Research of Membrane Proteins" on the basis of the interdisciplinary Scientific and Educational Center "Bionanophysics" of MIPT. By the end of 2011, it is planned to complete the work on the equipment of the laboratory, staff it and start research work.

ONEXIM Group, established in 2007, is one of the largest private investment funds in Russia, focusing on investments in the mining industry, real estate, innovative projects in the field of energy and nanotechnology.

The launch of the laboratory was part of a large program implemented within the framework of the Skolkovo Innovation Center project. The program provides for the exchange of world-renowned scientists in various fields of science and the involvement of leading specialists and scientists from all over the world to work in the Russian innovation sector. The creation of the laboratory at MIPT became possible thanks to the investments of the ONEXIM Group.

"By financing this project, we become equal participants in the global scientific community and gain access to the most advanced developments in the field of biophysics and biotechnology. These are the areas where Russia has an excellent chance to become one of the leaders in the development of know-how, which in the near future will be able to qualitatively change the lives of people around the world. With the help of such a unique laboratory, solving the problem of diseases of the century will become even more possible," said Valery Krivenko, Head of the High Technology Directorate of the ONEXIM Group.

The new laboratory is being created within the framework of the first priority direction of the development of NRU-MIPT – "Physics and technology of nanostructures, nanosystems, nanomaterials and nanobiophysics". The scientific activity of the laboratory will be based on promising studies of biomembranes and membrane proteins, which are of key importance for understanding the mechanisms of aging, the development of severe diseases and their treatment.

"We are glad that an excellent laboratory will appear in our country, where it is possible to implement innovative ideas and conduct research of a high level of complexity, as well as exchange experience with foreign colleagues," said Nikolay Kudryavtsev, Rector of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

The head of the laboratory was an outstanding German scientist Georg Buldt, director of the Institute of Complex Systems (ICS–5) of the Research Center of Julich (Germany). The visiting professor is known as the author of more than 120 articles in leading scientific publications, he owns internationally recognized pioneering work in the field of membranes and membrane proteins, and methods of their research.

"It is a great honor for me to participate in such an interesting project. I hope that in the near future the successes of our laboratory will become known in the world scientific community, and our achievements will be able to bring practical benefits to many people," Georg Buldt shared.
