Russian-Indian biotechnological intentions

Russia and India are planning joint projects on biotechnology, including the creation of a Russian-Indian scientific and educational center in the field of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals in Russia, a joint business incubator on agrobiotechnology, the production of vaccines based on Russian technologies, a project on the use of stem cells in ophthalmology based on a unique Indian development that has no analogues in the world. Indian bioindustry experts and representatives of the Federation of Asian Biotechnological Associations (FABA) will come to Moscow for the 2nd International Congress-exhibition "EurasiaBio-2010" to study the projects in detail.

Agreements on Russian-Indian projects were reached at the 7th International Forum "BioAsia - 2010", which took place on February 3-6, – said the President of the Society of Biotechnologists of Russia (OBR) Raif Vasilov. The forum was held in the famous Indian science and technology center - the city of Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh and organized by FABA, of which the OBR is a member.

The main participants of the Asian forum are representatives of the world's largest players in biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals and agrobiotechnology. 3,000 experts from 35 countries, including the European Union, Iran, Pakistan, and China held about 1,000 business negotiations, since BioAsia has a practical focus on medicine, pharmaceuticals, crop production and agriculture, and animal husbandry.

Hyderabad and the state of Andhra Pradesh, as Raif Vasilov said, are the main center of India in the field of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, where about 30% of the world's vaccine production is concentrated. The world's largest "Genome Valley" with a total area of 300 sq. km is being formed here. Unique complexes, scientific and technological parks, the most advanced biotechnology companies are being developed in the valley, unique conditions are being created to attract investors, develop companies such as Bharat Biotech and Vimta Labs.

India has achieved very serious results in the formation of an innovation system and technology transfer, – said Raif Vasilov, – traditionally this country has been accused of being bad with intellectual property protection, and this was a deterrent to investment. Almost all these issues have already been resolved. India has developed the most effective models of the innovation system that ensure technology transfer, venture business development and has made a big leap in the development of biotechnologies, unlike Russia, solving socio-economic problems with its help, including providing the population with its own medicines and nutrition.

For the first time, a delegation from the Russian Federation, organized by the OBR, which included representatives of business, science and education, including the NGO "Microgen", the Pushchinsky Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian University of Chemical Technology. Mendeleeva, representatives of the regions, including Tyumen. During the visit, there were speeches by Russian delegates, a presentation of domestic biotechnology, a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the main biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies of Andhra Pradesh. The Russian exposition at the exhibition was recognized as one of the best.

During the visit, joint projects were planned for implementation. Among them are the creation of a Russian-Indian scientific and educational center in the field of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals on the basis of Russia, the creation of a joint business incubator for agrobiotechnology, the organization of joint production of vaccines based on Russian technologies. Raif Vasilov noted the unique achievements of Indian scientists in the use of stem cells for therapeutic purposes, in particular, in ophthalmology. In a special center, 700 patients have already been able to restore their eyesight with the help of this technology. There is also an agreement on a joint project in this area and the transfer of technology to Russia.

The return visit of the Indian delegation to Russia will take place from April 12 to 15, when the 2nd International Congress "EurasiaBio", organized by the OBR, will be held in Moscow. A large delegation from India and FAB participating countries will come to the event," Vasilov noted, "and Russian experts have two months to work out the details of joint Russian-Indian projects. Russia and India can become strategic partners in the bioindustry, as evidenced by the successful history of friendly, fruitful relations between our countries.
