Against diabetic foot
Novosibirsk scientists are developing cell therapy methods for the treatment of diabetes complications
Researchers from the Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Lymphology – (branch of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS) create cell therapy technologies. One of the directions is the treatment of trophic ulcers on the legs in diabetes mellitus. This complication, known as diabetic foot syndrome, reduces the quality of life of patients and can lead to serious consequences, up to amputation of a limb.
"In cases where standard therapy does not give the required results, it is necessary to use alternative methods of treatment, such as the technology we offer," said Olga Vladimirovna Poveshchenko, MD, Head of the NIIKEL Laboratory of Cellular Technologies.
Its essence is as follows: a product is produced from the blood cells of the patient himself, which is then injected into the affected areas to improve blood flow when it is impossible to do it surgically, or to accelerate regeneration in trophic ulcers.
Clinical studies continuing at the NIIKEL clinic have shown that the healing time of trophic ulcers in some patients is reduced by a third. Now specialists are studying the long-term results of treatment based on the technology they have created, after which it will be possible to talk about obtaining a patent and introducing it into clinical practice.
"We conducted clinical studies of the new technology involving several dozen patients and obtained satisfactory results," said Vadim Valeryevich Nimaev, MD, Head of the Laboratory of Operative Lymphology and Lymph Detoxification of NIIKEL.
Scientists emphasize that although work in these areas is underway in many countries of the world, today they are still at the stage of clinical research. In this regard, the research conducted by Novosibirsk specialists is quite consistent with the world level. The results of this work will be discussed in more detail at the III Russian Interdisciplinary Conference with international participation "Diabetes Mellitus: from monitoring to management", which will be held in Novosibirsk on April 23-24.
