Cell therapy of Crohn's disease

Crohn's disease will begin to be treated with a person's own cells

Scientists have proved that human cells can be modified to treat a chronic disease affecting all parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical trials will start soon.

Researchers from the UK have proved that it is possible to use a person's own cells against Crohn's disease. The team has already successfully modified them and proved the potential effect, according to the website of the Center for Biomedical Research in London (Patients’ own cells could be the key to treating Crohn's disease).

The article by Goldberg et al. Correction of Defective T-regulatory Cells From Patients With Crohn's Disease by Ex Vivo Ligation of Retinoic Acid Receptor Alpha is published on the website of the journal Gastroenterology – VM.

Crohn's disease is a lifelong disease in which all parts of the gastrointestinal tract are affected in humans.

The cause of the disease is unknown in most cases, so patients are prescribed non-specific anti-inflammatory drugs that only support the condition until the next exacerbation.

The method of British scientists is based on cell therapy with their own "resources". Studying the blood cells of healthy people and patients with Crohn's disease, scientists came to the conclusion that against the background of this disease, regulatory T cells produce less protein integrin a4ß7.

The team created a special environment in the laboratory so that the cells turned out to be functional, like in healthy people. With the help of the RAR568 molecule, scientists have achieved the restoration of the protein level to the required level.

The grown cells must then be returned back to the patient via intravenous infusion, the authors explain.

Modern pharmaceuticals often cause severe side effects and do not help all patients, so scientists see great prospects in the new approach. Clinical trials in humans will begin within six months.
