Cell tourism? No matter what happens...

Foreign stem cell clinics give false hope to touristsInopressa
Clinics in many countries of the world offer untested, expensive and risky stem cell treatments to patients with serious diseases, writes The Times, referring to British doctors who do not approve of such therapies.

"Such methods of treatment can not only lead to a waste of patients' savings and the money of their well-wishers, but also entail a serious risk of infection, immune rejection and even cancer. In one of the cases, a two–year-old boy with an incurable brain disease received numerous tumors after he visited Russia to receive injections of embryonic stem cells," the author of the article Nicholas Evans reports.

Chris Mason, professor in the field of regenerative medicine at University College London, said that it is impossible to estimate the volume of the stem cell market for tourist services, but, in his opinion, thousands of patients receive unlicensed treatment every year.

"Only a limited number of stem cell therapies – for diseases of the blood, skin and cornea – are currently licensed for clinical use, although trials have begun on patients for a number of others," the article says.

Nevertheless, over a hundred private clinics around the world – in Germany, China, Russia, India and the USA – offer stem cell injections for the treatment of a large number of diseases. In Britain, where stricter legislation is in force, there are no such clinics registered, the newspaper clarifies.

The use of unregistered medical technologies was revealed in the clinics of the Chelyabinsk regionAMI-TASS
Inspections in medical and preventive institutions conducted by the Department of Roszdravnadzor in the Chelyabinsk region showed that in a number of institutions in the region there is the use of unregistered medical technologies, including treatment with stem cells.

Although the introduction of new technologies has led to a significant increase in the effectiveness of medical care, at the same time, the number of complications in the process of high-tech treatment may also increase, experts warn.

Roszdravnadzor emphasized that none of the technologies involving the use of stem cells in medical practice has been registered, that is, it is not allowed to be used.

Meanwhile, in July, the Office of Roszdravnadzor in the Chelyabinsk Region, together with the prosecutor's office, revealed that the Center for Cellular Technologies at the Regional Clinical Hospital LLC uses medical technology using stem cells to treat patients, which is a violation of current legislation.

The Prosecutor's office initiated a case of an administrative offense. In addition, the director of the Center for Cellular Technologies was warned against violating the law.Technology is a set of actions that includes methods, procedures, technological techniques, equipment and other tools that are systematically used to solve specific problems.

Roszdravnadzor stressed that, among other things, funds for medical technologies should be registered: all devices, tools, procedures – everything that is used in technology should be registered. All stages of admission to the use of new medical technologies in Russia are strictly defined in the administrative regulations of the Federal Service for Supervision of Healthcare and Social Development.

Since the adoption of the regulations, the electronic database of issued permits for the use of new medical technologies is available to all medical organizations in Russia. The Roszdravnadzor website constantly updates information about permitted technologies. The use of medical technology that is not permitted by the legislation of the Russian Federation is a gross violation of licensing requirements and conditions.

Roszdravnadzor specialists recommend that citizens pay attention to the availability of a license to use medical equipment when visiting polyclinics, and heads of medical institutions – not to violate laws.
