Live Yarn

"Yarn" from human cells will help to save damaged organs

The new material has a number of advantages over existing analogues. In particular, it does not require the use of scaffolds and is not rejected by the immune system. The first experiments with animals have already confirmed the effectiveness of yarn.

Thanks to new technologies, textile materials have appeared at the disposal of doctors, which can be used to heal wounds and replace fragments of damaged organs. However, not all patients respond to them in the same way. In particular, such tissues sometimes cause a violent immune reaction and are rejected by the body.

Researchers from France, Colombia and the USA, whose work is described in the press release of INSERM Human Textiles to Repair Blood Vessels, have proposed their own approach to solving this problem. They have developed a "yarn" of human fibroblasts – connective tissue cells that produce components of the extracellular matrix, including precursor molecules of collagen and elastin proteins.

Article by Magnan et al. Human textiles: A cell-synthesized yarn as a truly “bio” material for tissue engineering applications is published in the journal Acta Biomaterialia – VM.

The authors grew thin sheets consisting of fibroblasts, and then cut them into separate threads. These threads can be twisted, knotted, or used for knitting. This allows them to be used for "repairing" various tissues and organs – for example, stitching wounds, as well as creating valves or vessels.

Unlike analogues, the new material does not require the use of frames. In addition, if you grow a "yarn" from a person's own cells, the body will not reject it.

Made entirely of biological material, these blood vessels are well tolerated by all patients.

The development has already been successfully tested on animals. In particular, yarn helped to heal open wounds in rats and create an artificial blood vessel for sheep. According to the researchers, they plan to start testing on humans in the near future.
