A Greek woman gave birth to a child from three genetic parents, the media reported. Medic Artem Elmuratov shared his opinion on the effectiveness and safety of such procedures on Sputnik radio.

A 32-year-old Greek woman gave birth to a child from three genetic parents after artificial insemination, which was carried out by Greek and Spanish doctors, this is the first such case in the country, according to the website of the University of Barcelona (World's first baby is born in Greece through of Maternal Spindle Transfer technique developed by Embryotools).

The boy weighing 2960 grams was born with the help of an innovative medical method of transferring maternal cytoplasmic material, first introduced in Greece by the Institute of Life and the company Embryotools and involving the preservation of the mother's genetic material. The child has a small amount of donor genetic material, since mitochondria have their own DNA.

Both the mother and the child are doing well, the publication reports.

"The inalienable right of a woman to become a mother with her genetic material has become a reality at the global medical level for the first time," said Panagiotis Psatas, President of the Institute of Life.

According to him, the institute continues to help even more couples who face infertility problems and want to have children with their own DNA without resorting to egg donation.

Emryotools has announced that 24 more women are taking part in clinical trials and that eight embryos are ready for implantation.

Artem Elmuratov, co-founder and development director of the Genotek Medical and Genetic Center, expressed the opinion on Sputnik radio that it is too early to judge the effectiveness and safety of such procedures.

"This procedure is only the third in the world. This procedure may be useful for families who have certain diseases associated with mitochondria. It is not known about any negative consequences of this procedure. On the other hand, with such a small sample of cases, it's just too early to talk about it. But as far as I know, the first experience of such a procedure, which was carried out in Mexico three years ago, seems to be positive at the moment," said Artem Elmuratov.

The need for such a procedure, according to him, will arise quite rarely.

"If there are no critical side effects, then this technique is the future, but for a very small number of families. This procedure, in my subjective opinion, makes sense primarily in the case of pathologies associated with mitochondria. And this happens, but quite rarely," said Artem Elmuratov.
