Researchers have learned how to restore the spinal cord with stem cells of patients

Spinal cord injuries are among the most severe due to the complex rehabilitation process. But the experiments of researchers from Yale University together with a team of scientists from Research shows that stem cells can be an excellent helper in such injuries.

Additional experiments will be required to confirm the results of this preliminary study. It may take years, but scientists remain positive, because now they see that their method has the right to life.

The official website of Yale University wrote about their results.

You can read about the study in full in the journal Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery (Honmou et al., Intravenous Infusion of Auto Serum-expanded Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Spinal Cord Injury Patients: 13 Case Series).

Patients suffered spinal cord injuries due to falls or minor injuries. Because of this, they either lost motor function, or their coordination was disrupted, and sensitivity could also disappear. Some had bowel and bladder dysfunction.

Stem cells were obtained from people's own spinal cord using a culture protocol that took several weeks, which were later injected intravenously. Separately, it is noted that the study was not blind, and patients were not given a placebo.

More than half of the patients had significant improvements in key functions within a few weeks after the injection of stem cells – people regained the ability to walk or use their hands. Significant side effects have also not been reported.

"The idea that we can restore functions after brain and spinal cord injuries using the patient's own stem cells has intrigued us for many years. Now we have a hint that this is possible," says Steven Waxman, professor of neurology and neuroscience.
