Will the new "flame engine" become obsolete before the end of development?

Artificial heart can be created in Russia

RIA NewsThe United Instrument-Making Corporation (MIC, part of Rostec) and the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) plan to start creating an artificial heart in 2015, Alexander Kulish, head of the development and production of medical equipment of the MIC, told RIA Novosti.

He explained that the existing analogues of an artificial heart are an external device that allows you to replace the organ before the heart transplant. The designed device will be able to provide the patient with a full life, "not to survive until surgery, but a high-quality life with a new heart."

"Together with MAI, we are trying to launch a project to create an artificial heart. There are two types of such developments – on a constant blood flow and on an impulsive one. According to the constant blood flow in Russia, there are developments, the life span of a patient with such a heart is quite small. We are talking about impulsive blood flow, where a mechanism is implemented that is as close to natural as possible, when the heart pushes blood in portions," Kulish said.

According to him, there are similar developments in Russia, but they have not been brought to a logical conclusion. "We want to take up this work, but it is necessary to solve a lot of "paper" issues – this is what we are doing now with MAI," the agency interlocutor explained.

Kulish said that the corporation expects to start work already in 2015, while, in his opinion, within five years a biotechnology may appear that allows growing a living heart, which is why it is impossible to determine how relevant an artificial heart will be by the time the development is completed.

"From the point of view of technology development, it will pay off in any case. Even if you just sell the technology of implantation of the pump into the human body, the technology of regulation of valve activity and feedback, the appropriate software," the agency interlocutor is sure.

He recalled that the corporation is already developing the first Russian three-chamber pacemaker, which has successfully passed preliminary tests and, according to the plan, should be ready by the end of the year.
