Bioprinting and biofacturing – 2014

World experts in bioprinting and biofacturing will meet in Moscow

Mikhail Bakanov, SkolkovoThe world's leading scientists in the field of bioprinting and biofacturing will gather under the roof of the Hypercube on October 21 and 22, 2014 for an international conference dedicated to 3D bioprinting.

This is the second large-scale event in the field of biotechnology to be held in Russia.

The first – the popular scientific conference "Regenerative Medicine in Russia" - was held in February last year. At that time, the platform brought together more than 750 delegates from the scientific and medical communities, investment and business, education, representatives of relevant ministries and departments, as well as development institutions from different countries. Information coverage was conducted by more than 150 representatives of the Federal Mass Media.

The communication turned out to be productive, and the past year was marked by a number of scientific breakthroughs in the world of bioprinting and biofacturing. Therefore, this year the organizers of the conference – the Skolkovo Innovation Center, the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of Russia and the Laboratory of Biotechnological Research "3D Bioprinting Solutions" – decided to devote the current international meeting of scientists entirely to this topic. INVITRO was the General Partner. The "International Conference on Bioprinting and Biofacturing" will be held in the Skolkovo Hypercube on October 21-22 of this year.

Recognized world experts will discuss the rapid growth of revolutionary technology. At the two-day conference, colleagues will share the latest achievements in such areas as:

  • technologies of biofacturing, bioprinting, organ bioprinting;
  • cellular technologies, cellular engineering;
  • engineering and technical solutions of elements of the bioprinting technology platform;
  • materials science: bio-ink, bio-paper;
  • legislative framework, including registration, certification of cellular and tissue constructors;
  • implementation in practical healthcare.

The key speakers will be James J. Yu, MD, PhD, Professor, Deputy Director and Chief Researcher of the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University of Medical Sciences (North Carolina), Vladimir Mironov, Professor, Scientific Director of the Laboratory of Biotechnological Research "3D Bioprinting Solutions", Alexander Ovsyanikov, Associate Professor at the Technical University Vienna, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Construction, Institute of Materials Science and Technology of Materials (E308), Utkan Demirci, PhD, Associate Professor at Stanford University Medical School, Head of the Laboratory of Bioacoustic and Microelectromechanical Systems in Medicine, CHUA Chi Kai, Professor, Director of the Scientific and Technical University "Additive Manufacturing Center", School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Nanyang Technological University, Ibrahim Tarik Ozbolat, Associate Professor of the Department of Mechanical Organization of Industrial Production at the University of Iowa College of Engineering, Head of the research group of the Computer-Aided Design Center, co-director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Group, head of the research group of the Diabetes Research Center.

The conference will address the application and implementation of bioprinting in medicine, as well as the impact of tissue engineering products that can lead to a significant impact on the global market of medicines and organs.

"The use of innovations for the prevention and treatment of various diseases, as well as for the overall improvement of the quality of life is one of the main features of our information age," explains Vladimir Mironov, scientific director of the 3D Bioprinting Solutions Biotechnological Research Laboratory. – New generation technologies open up previously difficult-to-reach opportunities for us, radically changing the idea of all spheres and quality of life. All participants of the conference are leading experts in their fields with unique practical experience, and the more professionals from various fields of knowledge communicate with each other, the sooner research and development will become a medical fact for humanity."

A round table will be held on the second day of the conference: "Regulatory framework of biotechnological research". The topic of discussion is already extremely acute today. Bioprinting is one of the most interesting areas, capturing the attention of millions. It has already generated a lot of discussions amid concerns about issues such as, for example, the legal regulation of this field of biotechnology, which has not yet kept pace with the rapid development of the industry.

According to the forecasts of the analytical agency Gartner, "by 2016, 3D printing of tissues and organs (bioprinting) will cause a global discussion about the regulation of technology." Since this sphere has not yet been put on legislative rails in any state, Russia and the United States are already concerned about the formation of a legal framework that allows the use of products of a rapidly growing industry. In both States, documents with guidelines on the use of bioprinting products of vital organs are being prepared at the parliamentary level. This, as well as the registration procedure for innovative (unique) technical devices and other elements of the technological platform and biomaterials for tissue and cellular technologies, will be discussed at a round table attended by representatives of both government and specialized and scientific organizations.
