Connect to OPENBIO (2)

From October 5 to 8, the OpenBio platform for open communications in the field of virology, biotechnologies and biopharmaceuticals will be held for the eighth time in the Koltsovo science city of the Novosibirsk region.

The OpenBio program includes a three–day conference of young scientists and a scientific and business forum with discussions on longevity, combating the spread of HIV infection and developing vaccines against COVID-19, as well as an exhibition of achievements of biotechnology companies. The events are organized in a hybrid format, with the ability to connect to an online broadcast on the official website.

Countering the HIV epidemic in Russia

One of the main venues of the forum will be a round table in the format of an open dialogue "HIV in Russia: the latest developments and problems of pharmaceutical treatment", where representatives of public organizations and the patient community, doctors, experts of pharmaceutical companies and scientists who conduct research in the field of HIV control will gather.

The participants of the round table will discuss countering the HIV epidemic in Russia. They will raise a wide range of issues, including testing models and early diagnosis, trends in the provision of medicines, adherence to ARV therapy, availability of innovative approaches for patients and barriers to receiving care for people living with HIV.

An important part of the dialogue will be the discussion of modern approaches and developments. German Shipulin, Deputy Director General for Scientific and Production Activities of the FSBI "CSP" of the FMBA of Russia, will make a report on the prospects for the use of gene therapy against HIV.

"The topic of HIV infection is increasingly being discussed in Russia, but at the same time the very word "HIV" in the collective consciousness often causes an irrational sense of fear. I am sure that the only thing society can be afraid of is ignorance. Fears go away when people receive adequate information," shared Anton Eremin, one of the moderators of the round table, an infectious disease doctor, medical director of the AIDS Foundation.THE CENTER". – At the discussion platform, we will talk about approaches to HIV prevention, affordable testing, modern and promising treatment, but no less important, we will discuss the needs of people living with HIV. Yes, there is no effective vaccine against HIV yet, but "vaccination against discrimination due to HIV" can be done right now."

Denis Kamaldinov, Chairman of the Board of the NGO "Humanitarian Project", Yulia Vereshchagina, activist of the All-Russian movement "Patient Control", Denis Godlevsky, director of the association "For Access to Treatment", Natalia Gashnikova, head of the Department of retroviruses of the State Scientific Center of Virology and Biotechnology "Vector" and other experts will take part in the platform.

Predictive markers of COVID-19 and vaccine development

The most discussed platform of the forum last year was a round table dedicated to countering the COVID-19 pandemic. Leading Russian virologists and representatives of a number of leading biotech and pharmaceutical companies will gather again at OpenBio-2021.

During the discussion "Prospects for combating the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2", they will discuss the course of the pandemic and the features of its dynamics over the past year, the diagnosis of the disease, the development of new vaccines against COVID-19 and the preliminary results of the search for predictive markers of the course of COVID-19 in the human body, which can most likely determine the severity further course of the disease.

"The past year has brought a lot of changes. The saddest change is that the pandemic continues even on a larger scale than last year. If you look at the mortality statistics, the age part of the population mainly dies. And we are not talking about the age of 80-90 years, but about people 50-60 years old, who, as a rule, actively work and pass on their experience to others. Our discussion is necessary to outline clearer ways to move forward in the fight against the pandemic. We have already found out who is to blame, now we need to find out what to do," said Sergey Netesov, moderator of the discussion, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Virology at the NSU.

Special attention to viruses

The symposium "Virom of Russia. Discovery of new viruses", where scientists from leading scientific centers of Russia and the world will speak. Vector of Rospotrebnadzor proposed to organize the event in order to attract the attention of the scientific community to the issues of identifying and studying new viruses.

Experts will discuss the need for timely detection of new viruses and elimination of biological hazards in order to prevent the spread of new viral infections and ensure preparedness to counteract the pandemic. Among the topics of the symposium: new generation sequencing approaches to the search for viruses carried by ticks and mosquitoes, modern methods of analysis for the identification of viral material, the spread of infectious and parasitic diseases.

Evgeny Kunin, a leading researcher at the National Center for Biotechnological Information of the USA (Maryland), a member of the national Academies of Sciences of the USA, Russia, Europe, one of the most cited biologists in the world, will make an introductory report "The world of Viruses and its evolution" at the symposium.

In addition, a round table "The view of young scientists on the problems of viral diseases of the Russian Federation" will be held within the framework of the symposium.

"Throughout its history, the Vector Research Center has successfully solved the tasks of countering biological threats, and we consider the constant exchange of experience in this area and the expansion of the personnel base to be extremely relevant areas of work. In our opinion, OpenBio is an ideal platform for discussing ideas and mechanisms to prevent pandemics that humanity will not be ready for," said Rinat Maksyutov, moderator of the symposium, Director General of the Vector State Scientific Center for Virology and Biotechnology.

Challenges of the covid period

The forced mobilization and restructuring of the medical and pharmaceutical industries, the expansion of the production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, the flexible response of the economy to unpredictable changes in consumer demand, the need for a full–scale information campaign for universal vaccination - all this experts tend to attribute to the challenges of the covid period. The round table, which will sort out all these issues, will be held at OpenBio-2021. Among the main speakers is Elena Khrustaleva, Head of the Territorial Body of the Federal Service for Healthcare Supervision in the Novosibirsk Region.

"The main task is to discuss with the professional community unfair practices in the last couple of years. These practices are related to the provision of pharmaceutical and medical services, as well as the circulation of medical devices. The risk of such practices is the threat of harm to the life and health of citizens and a negative impact on the quality of work of organizations. A possible solution is in the supervisory authority, which, thanks to the changed legislation, can become a wise adviser who helps to sort out problematic issues in connection with the priority of the preventive direction in the work. The essence of changes in legislation in the field of supervisory, medical and pharmaceutical activities will be explained," Elena Khrustaleva said.
