What is happening in the pharmaceutical market: results of the III session

On September 26-27, 2011, the 3rd autumn session of pharmaceutical business leaders "What is happening in the pharmaceutical market?", organized by infor-media Russia, took place at the Congress Center "Swissotel Krasnye Kholmy". The conference was held with the traditional support of the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and the Association of Russian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers. The partners of the event were IMS-Health Russia, CMI "Pharmexpert", SKB Kontur, Terrasoft company and VEGAS LEH law firm.

In order to answer the main question of the event – what is going on in the pharmaceutical market - about 300 participants, representatives of the pharmaceutical business, including the top officials of the industry, gathered.

Vladimir Shipkov, AIPM; Vadim Muzyaev, PROTEK; Serge Scotto, Takeda; Marina Veldanova, Ipsen; Ewald Kraid, The Boston Consulting Group in the format of an interactive discussion discussed with the delegates of the conference the main market trends, problems of business profitability in the short and long term, and also gave their forecasts on how The pharmaceutical business in Russia will develop in 2012.

A separate focus session with the participation of government representatives was devoted to the investment climate of the pharmaceutical business in Russia. Elena Telnova, Acting Head of Roszdravnadzor; Artem Lobov, Head of the Legal Department of the FAS State Order Placement Control Department; Nenad Pavletich, President of AstraZeneca Russia; Ivan Glushkov, Head of the Corporate Development Department, STADA CIS; Viktor Dmitriev, General Director took part in the discussion of the state strategy regarding the sector and a number of other topical issues ARFP and other participants of the meeting.

During the AIPM press conference, which took place immediately after the lunch break, Vladimir Shipkov, Executive Director, AIPM, noted that the public discussion on the draft law "On the basics of protecting the health of citizens of the Russian Federation" within the framework of the conference is an unprecedented dialogue that contributes to solving the most difficult problems in the modernization and development of domestic healthcare.

"... We are confident in the need to make changes to those legislative regulations that do not reflect the needs of the modern healthcare system and as a result lead to a decrease in the availability of medicines ..." – Marina Veldanova, Head of the Ipsen representative office in the Russian Federation, commented on her attitude to the topic.

The recognition of the results of clinical trials conducted outside the territory of the Russian Federation, the registration of prices, as well as the prospects for the development of the over-the-counter medicines market, the participants of the event were able to discuss at a special meeting under the auspices of AESGP. Speakers were: Viktor Dmitriev, CEO, AERPM; Humbertus Cranz, CEO of AESGP; Alfred Gruen, Head of the Economic Affairs Committee, AESGP and Salvator Caizzone, Executive Vice President in Europe of Reckitt Benckiser Group plc.

In parallel with the meeting, a discussion was held on the topic of the generic and original drugs market. As summarized by the moderator of the analytical panel Maria Denisova, Executive Director, IMS-Health Russia, "the Russian pharmaceutical market lives by its own special rules" and today is largely defined as the market of branded generics. In turn, within the framework of the round table, representatives of Russian regions focused on the development of pharmaceutical production discussed issues of interaction with the federal center and the difficulties that the regions had to face.

Svetlana Baykova, Consultant of the Department of Economic Development of the Yaroslavl Region, Anatoly Sotnikov, General Director of the Agency for Innovative Development – the Center for Cluster Development of the Kaluga Region, and Marina Shipulina, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Diabetic Society, came to share their experience of overcoming difficulties in creating clusters.

A wonderful conclusion to the eventful day of the conference was a charity reception in favor of the fund for helping children with cancer and other serious diseases "Give Life". Under the accompaniment of a jazz orchestra in a pleasant atmosphere, the guests of the reception were able to see and evaluate the presentations of social and educational projects of such companies as Novo Nordisk, PharmFirma Sotex, Boehringer Ingelheim LLC, STADA CIS, Akrikhin.

On September 27, in the format of a business breakfast, the conference participants discussed issues of pharmaceutical distribution and pharmacy retail. Rustem Muratov, Vice President for Development, ROSTA Group; Igor Filatov, General Director, PROTEK Medical Center; Andrey Gusev, General Director of Rigla pharmacy chain; Dmitry Dain, Project Manager, PHARMAT and Eric Blondeau, General Director, Alliance Healthcare Russia; moderator Nelly Ignatieva, The Executive Director of the Russian Association of Pharmacy Chains shared their forecasts on the prospects of the mergers and acquisitions market in the sector, and also gave valuable practical examples of cost reduction. Mr. Filatov also outlined the need to control the distribution of distributors' shares in order to protect the market and sales and to support small regional distributors, emphasizing that, in his opinion, "the future belongs to national distributors." The speakers of the parallel session, in turn, presented practical cases on the topic of strategic marketing, including: Boris Liparteliani, Director of Strategy, Novartis Consumer Health, OTC; Dmitry Shchurov, Director of Strategic Business Planning, Pfizer; Nikolay Zinin, Head of Sales Efficiency Improvement, Dr.Reddy's Laboratories; Nikolay Bespalov, Director of Research and Consulting at the Center for Marketing Research "Pharmexpert". Mr. Bespalov noted that experts predict the growth of the market of medicines in the Russian Federation in 2011 by 10-15%, but expect a number of legislative changes, including for drugs for the treatment of rare diseases. In this regard, as Nikolay noted, there is hope that in 2011-2012 the market growth will go along the upper limit, that is, by 15% per year. The moderator of the meeting was Oleg Feldman, Head of research in the field of healthcare, SynovateHealthcare.

Examples of CRM projects and the possibilities of automated data accounting in the pharmaceutical business were presented by Yulia Tolmacheva, an expert in the pharmaceutical field of the Terrasoft group of companies, and Ivan Rybalko, project manager of the Diadok company, took part in the business process optimization session.

The topic of the future in the use of interactive Internet technologies in pharmaceuticals, which concluded the 3rd autumn session of the leaders of the pharmaceutical business, caused a "heated" debate among the participants of the event. During the discussion, questions arose related to the legislative regulation of the work of "medical" social networks and new opportunities in the promotion of pharmaceutical products.

Summing up the session, the participants noted the special relevance and wide coverage of the issues discussed, as well as the usefulness of the event as a whole. Based on the presented experience and the opinions of colleagues, the delegates of the event had the opportunity to determine the main directions of market development and answer the question of concern to everyone – what changes are expected in the pharmaceutical market next year.
