A shot in the brain instead of diet and physical education

Gene therapy will help you lose weight

According to scientists, an alternative to diets can be injections into the brain of a gene whose product controls appetite.

We are talking about a gene that controls the production of the hormone leptin. This hormone is secreted by fat cells and it is he who sends signals to the brain about saturation. The amount of leptin synthesized by cells depends on the amount of adipose tissue in the body. In obese people, the level of leptin is elevated and the brain stops responding to information about satiety.

To treat obesity, Urszula Iwaniec and her colleagues suggested using gene therapy. They tested the effectiveness of the new method on rats. The experiment lasted 18 weeks. An adenoassociated virus carrying the leptin gene was injected into the brain of animals using injections. Rodents who received leptin injections began to eat less, they lost weight and were able to maintain it. At the same time, there was no loss of bone mass.

The authors believe that the new therapy may be useful in the fight against excess weight. They assume that such treatment will be safe for those who plan to lose weight and maintain their normal weight.

Article by Turner et al. Hypothalamic leptin gene therapy reduces body weight without accelerating age-related bone loss is published in the open access in the Journal of Endocrinology, on the OSU website you can read its brief retelling: Gene therapy could aid weight loss without affecting bone loss, new research finds – VM.
