Cancer is inherited

Scientists have found out which people are predisposed to developing cancer

Researchers from the Boston Dana-Farber Institute of Oncology have identified a rare hereditary gene mutation that leads to the development of cancer, according to a press release Inherited pancreatic cancer risk mutation identified.

Article by Nissim et al. Mutations in RABL3 alter KRAS prenylation and are associated with hereditary pancreatic cancer published in the journal Nature Genetics – VM.

Scientists observed a family, five members of which had pancreatic cancer, and three more had other types of cancer. DNA sequencing allowed specialists to detect a mutation in the RABL3 gene both in those who were diagnosed with cancer by doctors and in those who were not diagnosed with such a diagnosis.

The authors of the work suggested that this mutation causes a predisposition to pancreatic cancer, and tested the hypothesis on a large population of danio fish. This model confirmed that a mutation in the RABL gene significantly increases the growth of cancer cells.

It is noted that the mutation is not provoked by various somatic changes in the life of the organism, but is innate in nature. In addition, scientists have found that the modification of the RABL gene facilitates the penetration of the KRAS protein associated with the development of pancreatic cancer through the cell membrane.

Experts stressed that the mutation of the RABL3 gene is rare. At the same time, all patients whose families have previously been diagnosed with cancer are recommended to undergo screening.
